Meter Data Management System (MDMS)
1. Data Validation, Estimation, and Editing (VEE)The MDMS acts as the quality control engine for incoming telemetry. It automatically validates raw data for anomalies (e.g., spikes or negative consumption), estimates missing data points based on historical trends, and allows for manual editing to ensure only accurate data flows to billing and analytics systems.
2. Billing Determinant CalculationInstead of passing raw data directly to billing, the MDMS processes and aggregates the time-series meter reads into complex billing determinants. This includes calculating Time-of-Use (ToU) buckets, maximum peak demand, and prepay/credit deductions (like STS tokens) before passing the finalized figures to the Customer Information System (CIS).
3. Long-term Storage and AnalyticsIt serves as the enterprise-wide system of record for all meter data, By storing massive amounts of historical time-series data (often using databases like TimescaleDB), it enables advanced analytics for load forecasting, grid health monitoring, water/energy loss detection, and customer-facing consumption dashboards.
Head-End System (HES) Controls
1. Two-Way Communication & Data CollectionThe HES is the direct gateway to physical devices. It is responsible for speaking the specific protocols of the meters(e.g., LwM2M, DLMS/COSEM) to reliably schedule automated meter reads, collect incoming telemetry, and execute on-demand commands like remote disconnects or valve closures.
2. Device Lifecycle & Configuration ManagementThe HES controls the operational state of the meter fleet. It handles the initial provisioning and commissioning of new devices, synchronizes their clocks, pushes configuration updates, and manages Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA) upgrades.
3. Network Health & Alarm MonitoringThe HES continuously monitors the health of both the devices and the communication network. It processes hardware-level events and alarms—such as low battery warnings, tamper alerts (e.g., cover open), and network signal degradation—allowing operators to proactively dispatch maintenance before a device completely fails.
